National Grid

National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island, and manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). It is the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeastern U.S.

Security Management Systems was commissioned to implement a security plan to include access control and video surveillance at four sites including one of its largest facilities in Greenpoint Brooklyn. This high security complex incorporates both an electrical power grid and liquid natural gas storage.

The complex system architecture integrates multiple technologies encompassing microwave detection, area fence protection and surveillance. It is supported by a fiber optic backbone encompassing the full facility perimeter and numerous interior buildings.

These systems are also integrated with card access control for highly sensitive areas within the complex. Both the intrusion and access control systems were integrated into a digital video recording system providing both local monitoring and integration into the National Grid proprietary WAN for remote monitoring and control at a remote facility.

The $1.6 million security project was completed within six months.
